Choosing an Anemometer

Anemometers measure air velocity for ventilation checks, HVAC troubleshooting and environmental testing. Select a model based on the expected airspeed, measurement location, probe design and recording requirements. Sper Scientific options include vane anemometers, hot wire instruments, combination environmental meters and SD card loggers.

Vane and Hot Wire Measurements

Vane anemometers use a rotating impeller to measure airflow and are practical for checking vents, grilles and general air movement. Hot wire anemometers use a heated sensor and are useful for lower air velocities and measurements within ducts. A telescopic probe helps reach recessed or difficult-to-access locations.

Air Velocity and Air Volume

Air velocity describes how fast air moves, commonly expressed in meters per second or feet per minute. Air volume describes how much air passes through an opening, typically expressed in cubic feet per minute (CFM) or cubic meters per minute. On models supporting volume calculations, entering the correct duct or opening area is essential.

Recording and Environmental Measurements

SD card logging models support recording airflow readings over time. Combination instruments can also measure temperature or other environmental parameters, depending on the model. The collection includes anemometer/thermometers, a psychrometer/anemometer and environmental quality meters.

Getting Consistent Readings

Align the sensor with the airflow according to the instrument’s instructions and allow readings to stabilize. Airflow can vary across a duct or grille, so measurements at several positions provide a more representative assessment than a single reading. Keep hands and nearby objects clear of the sensor to minimize disturbances.
